Maya, Aztec, and Inca cultures were studies in fifth grade social studies. In the art room the students learned about the Huichol Indians who are decendents of the Aztec. Nearikas or yarn paintings are made by the Huichol Indians. Students made nearikas using yarn on cardboard.

K/1 students learned about Primary and Secondary colors. They created a 'color wheel' caterpillar using this new information.

In third grade, we talked about Georgia O'Keeffe's 'Radiator Building, Night, New York'. We also looked at other art works of cities at night. We talked about the shapes of the tops of different city buildings. The final project was a 'City Nightscape' made from construction paper.

Fourth grade students created Modigliani style portraits in November. Modigliani used elongated heads,  noses, and necks.

 "Tar Beach" by Faith Ringgold was read by K/1 students. We talked about the quilt that Faith Ringgold made to go with the story. Students then decorated squares of paper with designs and patterns which they glued down to create a border for a paper story quilt.

Students finished their paper quilts by drawing a picture of themselves with their family doing something they like to do together.

Third grade students learned about Wayne Thiebaud and his paintings of sweets. The students learned about drawing cakes and used oil pastels to color their cakes.
